Money Management Plus: Free Financial Planning Help Available

If you are facing financial difficulties and don't qualify for the AARP Foundation Money Management Program, here is potential help.

AARP has connected with the Project for Financial Independence, the nation's first multi-organizational pro bono financial planning effort. This project, coordinated by the National Endowment for Financial EducationĀ® (NEFEĀ®), a nonprofit organization that educates Americans about personal finance, is a collaborative effort among six respected independent financial services organizations. It provides personal financial advice to people who cannot afford a financial advisor, or who are facing an immediate or unusual financial crisis.

In order to receive pro bono financial planning assistance, you must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Have a low income according to the standards set forth by the U.S. Census. For example, $9,500 for a one person household and $12,500 for two;

  • Be facing an immediate financial crisis (e.g. recently experienced a personal or widespread disaster, a long-term illness, the death of a family member, an eldercare crisis, etc.);

  • Be dealing with significant indebtedness or bankruptcy;

  • Be enlisted in the military.

To see if you qualify for this assistance you can download a form, fill it out, and fax it to NEFE, or fill out an online form.

Financial advisors may offer help with money management and related financial education, and can also offer assistance with prioritizing debt repayments and insurance costs. One of the project's goals is to empower individuals with basic money management skills and knowledge.

Please note referrals to the Project for Independence do not constitute an endorsement of any information, advice, or recommendations of any individuals who participate in this program. AARP Foundation has not selected any of the financial planners for referrals in this program. However, we would be interested in your experience working with a planner in this program. Please give us your feedback.
