| The Massachusette Money Management Program started in 1991. Initial funding of $50,000 was provided by a financial services company whose broker was convicted of "churning" his elderly client's account. For the following several years, start-up grants for new sites were obtained from various foundations that focused on improving the lives of elders. In 1994, Older Americans' Act funds were used to provide statewide coordination of the program. Once the value of the program was seen, several years of lobbying the state legislature followed, resulting in full funding for statewide coordination and partial funding for local sites. Currently, the network of twenty five local Money Management Programs is capable of providing their service to every city and town in the Commonwealth. |
